New Year Celebrations Around the World
​
1. Before finding out different ways people celebrate the New Year, go to the following website and click on your chosen country:
  • Kids World Travel Guide    

2. Look for and take notes on the following:
  • Location (describe where the country is)
  • Population (how many people live there; some information about them)
  • Activities for kids
  • Other Interesting Facts 
Other websites that might give more information about your country include:
  • CIA World Fact Book

Below are some databases that may be helpful (Go to the library software ( library.vsb.bc.ca )  - select Vancouver Technical Secondary from the drop down menu - log in at the top right using your student number and password - under the HOME tab, take a look at the following resources:)
  • National Geographic Kids (search by country)
  • The Canadian Encyclopedia (Canada)
  • World Book (search by country)

3. a)Use the following websites and add information, in a table, comparing different ways people around the world celebrate the New Year.  Think and take notes on:
  • who? (who is celebrating)
  • how? (how they are celebrating)
  • why? (why are they celebrating in this way)
  • when? (when are they celebrating)
  • where? (where are they celebrating)

  Websites with information about New Year Celebrations, include:
  • BBC: How do people celebrate New Year around the world?
  • CBC Kids: How do they celebrate New Year in other countries?
  • CBC Kids: Before we count down the year, let’s get some facts about New Year’s Day


3.  b) How might these celebrations be different during the COVID 19 pandemic? Explain.

Sr. Links Passion Project: Using the Canadian Encyclopedia, choose a person, event, place or thing as a topic for your project.  You will share your project with the class.

1.  TOPIC: You will spend your first day exploring the Canadian Encyclopedia to choose a topic for your passion project.
  • Go to the library software ( library.vsb.bc.ca )  -  select Vancouver Technical Secondary from the drop down menu - log in at the top right using your student number and password - under the HOME tab, find The Canadian Encyclopedia. 
  • Explore the Canadian Encyclopedia and make a list of interesting topics for your project. Pick a topic you will enjoy learning about, and want others to learn more about too.  You get to be the educator!
    • some possible topics are:​
      • ​Sandra Oh (actor/person)
      • Lunar New Year (event)
      • Sikhism in Canada (thing)
      • disasters like the Fort McMurray Wildfire (event)
      • Iqaluit (place)
      • and so on....
  • ​Discuss your choice with your teacher.
​2.  POWERPOINT:  Your finished project will be in the form of a PowerPoint.  Please include:
  • A title (introduction) slide showing your name, topic, and 1-2 appropriate images with captions.
  • Four or more information slides telling about your topic (think: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY). ​
    • Each slide should have:​
      • 2 - 3 bullets
      • 1 -2 appropriate images with captions
    • ​​​​​One slide should include an appropriate video (10 minutes or less) on your topic.
  • One reflection slide explaining why you chose this topic to share.
  • A Works Cited slide
